Deception Island & Polar Plunge
In December 2025, 2041 Hong Kong and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) co-hosted a groundbreaking live broadcast, connecting Robert Swan’s latest Ice Station expedition to Hong Kong. For 30 minutes, we had the privilege of speaking with Robert Swan — the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles — dialling in live from Antarctica. Remarkably, the entire call was powered solely by solar energy, a stark contrast to when Robert first set foot on Antarctic ice, navigating with nothing more than a sextant.
Over the decades, Robert has witnessed dramatic changes in our planet’s last great wilderness. Beyond discussing scientific research and NASA tests, he shared candid insights on technology, tourism, and why he remains committed to creating a more sustainable planet.
“There’s over 100,000 people that come to Antarctica every year now. I can’t stop tourism, (but) any tourism needs to be responsible.”
His team at Union Glacier even goes as far as removing all waste — including human waste — despite the inconvenience. When asked why he continues his mission, Robert said: “People like myself have got to support you to do the right thing. Not just sort of pass it over and say ‘good luck’. So I keep going because I have to, and I keep going because I truly care about this place. It’s the last chance we have on Earth.”
