Antarctica revealed itself as a place of profound extremes. On an expedition, our founders witnessed climate change not as abstract data, but as tangible reality: unexpected rainstorms on a desert continent, record-high temperatures, and the collapse of a major ice shelf.

These were not isolated events, but symptoms of a deeper systemic imbalance.
The result of choices made far from the ice, yet felt most acutely here.

That experience reshaped our purpose and led directly to the founding of 2041HK — a commitment to turn what we witnessed in Antarctica into local action for sustainability in Hong Kong.

Alarming Bells From Antarctica

Polar explorer Sir Robert Swan inspired the movement by highlighting the 2041 deadline when the treaty protecting Antarctica from mining expires. Selected as Hong Kong delegates, our co-founders joined 173 international leaders in Antarctica to witness climate impacts firsthand and undergo climate training.

Turning Ice Melt into Purpose

Experiencing a warming polar desert and hearing the explosive collapse of a glacier turned abstract climate data into an urgent, tangible reality for the co-founders. Upon their return to Hong Kong and isolated in COVID-19 hotel quarantine, our co-founders reflected on their responsibility and brainstormed how to empower local youth to drive tangible impact.

2041 Hong Kong officially launched to create highly accessible, localised sustainability frameworks tailored for Hong Kong’s community. Today, 2041 Hong Kong actively empowers youth and guides local businesses & institutions to integrate accessible, localised sustainability strategies into the core of everything they do.

2041 Hong Kong (2041HK) takes its name from the year 2041, when the international agreement protecting Antarctica from exploitation, the Madrid Protocol, is due for review. 2041 Hong Kong applies this “Antarctic Spirit” locally, focusing on building environmental sustainability and climate resilience within Hong Kong.

The Antarctic Treaty, through the Madrid Protocol, is built around a 50-year framework that completely prohibits commercial exploitation, mining, and drilling in Antarctica. While the mining ban itself is indefinite, the agreement opens for possible review after this 50-year period, making the years around 2041 a critical moment for the future protection of the continent.

Antarctica was our founding catalyst, but our daily operations are entirely hyper-local. Our co-founders brought polar insights back to Hong Kong to build pragmatic sustainability frameworks and initiatives. We focus on climate education, talent upskilling, industry research, and addressing Hong Kong’s specific sustainability challenges.

While our roots are youth-led, we welcome support from people of all walks of life. Our work spans both youth and corporate sectors: we deliver school-based STEAM education programmes, provide strategic sustainability insights, speak at regional ESG events, and partner with local enterprises.

Our core expertise is sustainability consulting and education. Instead of just sharing dry carbon data, we act as creative intermediaries. We design interactive community exhibitions, run climate leadership workshops, and build customised corporate frameworks to make sustainability highly accessible and practical.

No. The year 2041 marks a critical deadline: the point at which the international treaty protecting Antarctica can first be reviewed. We use this as a symbolic “ticking clock” for climate urgency.
